A Virtual Private Server (VPS) is a self-contained subdivision of a physical server that to all important intents and purposes appears to its administrator and users to be a physical server.

It can be rebooted independently of the physical server and runs its operating system and applications independently of the physical server.

Another term sometimes used to describe a VPS is Virtual Dedicated Server (VDS) or Container
